Q&A With Jazmin

How did you hear about Mercy?

"I heard about Mercy after high school when working in different healthcare facilities, a lot of local nurses went to Mercy. The school was also recommended to me by other nursing students I knew who were attending. When it was time to apply, I knew Mercy was the right fit for me. During my application process, I made sure to visit the Bronx campus for a tour and meet with admissions. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the Bronx, I knew I鈥檇 be a part of a diverse population full of students who I could relate to, and I am so proud to be a part of the nursing program here at Mercy."

What inspired you to pursue nursing?

"My high school exposed me to nursing through a Geriatric Career Development program in my sophomore year. We worked as interns in a Bronx nursing home where I was able to interact with patients while assisting nurses and other staff. From then on, I knew nursing was my long-term goal. The amount of care and compassion I saw in the patient-nurse relationship was inspiring. There鈥檚 a level of humanity unseen in any other profession that is unique to nursing."

Who are your role models or mentors?

"While my parents taught me hard work and resilience, my true models and mentors are the educators in my life, from jobs I鈥檝e had to professors and other people I鈥檝e met in day-to-day life I鈥檝e really taken valuable lessons and advice from so many of them, especially at my time here at Mercy."

What are your plans after graduation?

"After graduation, I will pass my NLCEX and a start working, I have to pay these student loans back! No, but really, I intend on securing a job, hopefully in pediatric critical care & then taking a well-earned vacation! I also plan on continuing volunteering and networking through different organizations. My long-term goal, likely in 2 years, is to go back to school to become a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner."

How did I find out about the Student Nursing Association?

"I found out about the SNA through an email from Maryanne Ellis! It was the Fall election email. Since it was fairly new the Bronx campus students didn鈥檛 have much awareness about it, including myself. I followed them on Instagram and joined the Microsoft Teams chat and started to get involved. I鈥檓 so glad we are growing our members and getting both campuses more involved."
